Johan Sverdrup site investigations and geotechnical design

NGI played a key role in evaluating the ground conditions at the Johan Sverdrup Field, located at the Utsirahøyden in the North Sea, 140 km west of Stavanger.

The work included recommendations for soil design parameters and applying these in geotechnical analyses and design in conjunction with foundation engineering.

Challenge

The Johan Sverdrup field is Norway's largest new development, with 4 jacket platforms and several other structures.

Method and services

NGI has been involved with three rounds of offshore site investigations, advanced laboratory testing, and soil parameter evaluation. We have also been directly supporting clients such as Kvaerner, MSC Gusto, and Master Marine with the design of piles for jacket platforms and foundations for rigs.

Result

The challenging soil layers at the site have resulted in innovative geotechnical testing and foundation solutions that aim to provide an optimized solution to the project with critical time frames for development.
